Kopanang is an impoverished settlement on the outskirts of Johannesburg where a Dominican sister, Sister Sheila, is working to better the lives of a community of women, mostly single women. They have been trying to stay alive by prostitution in a community battling AIDs and poverty,
Jo said she first met Sister Sheila when Jo was principal of St Lucy’s. Sheila said when she first visited us she wanted to thank us “on behalf of our mothers, our grandmothers, our children of Kopanang” for giving people hope.
The women make and try to sell wonderful wall hangings, and a co-operative that the sisters there have formed now trains them in design – and in running a production, learning how to run a photocopier.
