Adam Cryer (Our Kids Our Mob) co-ordinator of this popular Aboriginal programme spoke at our meeting this morning about the success of their youth programme and the support received from Rotarian Bob and Phil (pictured here with Adam)

A note from Adam:
Since 1 January 2012 a partnership has been in place between Hornsby Council and Rotary Wahroonga to provide the “Our Kids, Our Mob” (OKOM) program. This program, with the support of National Parks and Wildlife, provides social and educational activities for Aboriginal children who are in non-Aboriginal care placements. The group provides cultural support as well as community development guidance in a social and relaxed setting.

Some of the aims of the program include:
  • Reduction of feeling isolated for the families caring for Aboriginal children
  • Social connectedness outside of the program
  • Cultural awareness and inclusiveness for the families
  • Community engagement and capacity building, particularly around culture and social support

These aims are seeing some fruition through the project thus far and further results have been included in the report provided.

Cheers
Adam
