                           President's Message

We tend to think of slavery as belonging to a different era or a third world country. In reality slavery is perennial and Australia is not exempt. Last week Andrew Starr gave an interesting presentation on the phenomenon of modern slavery, much of which he has seen and experienced first hand during his time in overseas postings and in Australia. A couple of days after Andrew’s presentation I read an article by Steve Baird who is the CEO of the International Justice Mission in Australia. In the article he mentions that when doing Christmas shopping, know that eight out of ten products on the shelves have been produced through supply chains relying on enslaved workers at some point. He also mentioned the NSW Parliament is moving closer to passing the Modern Slavery Amendment Act. I read another article that talked about the exploitation of seasonal workers, which would come under the definition of modern slavery.

Sergeant Phillip has booked space at the Bunnings Thornleigh Christmas Night Market on Thursday 9th December 6-8pm. This is a great opportunity to promote Rotary and to fundraise. Phillip has some ideas regarding goods to sell and will share these ideas with us.

We are well underway for the Centenary event in Wahroonga Park on Saturday 4th December 8.00am to 9.00am. Jo Karaolis and her team have put considerable effort into the planning and promotion and have established a good relationship with
Ku-ring-gai Council. We would like as many of our members to attend as possible.

Many of us are looking forward to the Celebration/Christmas function which will be held on Thursday 16th December at Magpies Waitara. There have been several cancellations from earlier bookings, however this has allowed members and guests on the waiting list to now come and join in the fun.

A reminder there will be no Zoom breakfast meeting this Wednesday 24th November. Instead, we will meet in Wahroonga Park at the Rotunda at 7.30am. This will be our first time back together (non-Zoom) as a Club and we will induct Robin Knight at 8.00am. Let’s all make this a special occasion for Robin.

We need volunteers and ideas to sell items and/promote membership - food selling not an option presently.

So let's get behind this opportunity as it may lead to a regular presence in months to come.
